A minute’s silence was ordered across Sri Lanka on Saturday as the visionary British science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke was buried in a plot in the General Cemetery in the capital, Colombo, Agence France-Presse reported. Tamara Ekanayake, daughter of his business partner, Hector Ekanayake, said, “He wanted us to write on his tombstone: ‘Here lies Arthur Clarke. He never grew up but didn’t stop growing.’ ” Clarke was 90 when he died on Wednesday. Family, friends, schoolchildren and space buffs walked behind his coffin as the police and security personnel led the way to the cemetery. Clarke had asked for a funeral without political pomp or religious rites, but politicians, a dozen Buddhist monks and a Catholic priest joined the mourners and watched as his body was buried. The government asked people to observe a minute of silence at midafternoon, when the burial took place, and a newspaper headline mourned the “final voyage of a titan.”.
